Safety Around Water Initiative

Did you know that Mississippi is the fourth worst state in the nation for drownings? On top of that, it's the most landlocked state in the top 4. More alarmingly, drowning is the number one cause of accidental death in Mississippi. The Y sees these issues and wants to be a driver of change.

In 2022, the Y provided 225 free swim lessons to summer campers. As a result, all kindergarteners and first graders passed the swim test, which had never been done before. In 2023, the Y provided over 3,000 free swim lessons to summer campers and the greater Jackson area community with the help of the Regions Foundation. As a result, 70 kids passed the swim test, and all participants could float and get out of the pool independently.

In 2024, the Y wants to expand that number and ensure that all 5 -7 year old campers learn how to swim. The Y's summer camps already offer a safe haven and financial assistance to families in need, so this offering can reach many who do not have access.
